Plaza Road Closures Through Fiesta Weekend

Part of Mayor Gonzales’ People to the Plaza Initiative

By Media Release from City of Santa Fe July 16, 2014
The City of Santa Fe announces today that Plaza closures begin and will continue until the Monday following Fiesta weekend, September 8, 2014. The west side of Lincoln Avenue and the east side Old Santa Fe Trail are now closed; the closure went into effect this morning at 8:00 a.m. West San Francisco remains open to thru traffic and the outside lanes of both Lincoln and Old Santa Fe Trail will be open for deliveries and public safety vehicles. The closures were authorized as part of the People to the Plaza Resolution which was approved by the City Council on June 25, 2014.

The City of Santa Fe Parks Division has placed multiple planters to block off Lincoln Avenue and Old Santa Fe Trail to thru traffic. The plaza is full of colorful flowers and lush green grass thanks to the hard work of the Parks Division staff.

“It has taken six years to get the Plaza grass this way,” said Andrew Garcia, City of Santa Fe Parks Division. “We have used many different methods and different types of fertilization.”

With the road closures in effect and the Plaza looking more spectacular than ever it is a great time to enjoy the city’s historic center. In addition to the road closures Mayor Gonzales’ People to the Plaza Resolution also includes placing approximately eight sets of tables and chairs on Lincoln which should arrive in less-than two weeks. The resolution’s purpose is to reinvigorate the Plaza by making it safer and more pleasant for both locals and visitors while also increasing economic development opportunities.
