Halloween Safety Tips 2014

By Media Release from Santa Fe Police and Fire Departments October 29, 2014
Santa Fe Police and the Santa Fe Fire Department want to ensure Halloween is spook free and full of safe treats for everyone enjoying the holiday.

The city would like parents to discuss the following safety tips with their children. Residents need to beware of the increase in pedestrian traffic as trick-or-treaters hit the streets Friday night. Additional patrol officers will be out in full force conducting traffic stops, sobriety checks and monitoring safety.

Trick-or-Treaters:

Never go inside stranger’s home

If any adult tries to get you into their car or home make as much noise as possible

Yell “This person is trying to take me!”

Run as fast as you can and call 911

Make sure your costume is visible to traffic, especially in the dark

Carry a flashlight or glow sticks and have reflective tape on your costume

Travel in groups with a responsible adult

Plan out your route before time and leave a copy with a parent

Always look both ways before crossing the street, do so in well-lit areas and at intersections

Stay in familiar neighborhoods

Dress appropriately for the weather, including warm clothes or rain gear

Bring water to prevent dehydration

Have an adult inspect all candy before you eat any of it to make sure it’s safe

Residents handing out treats:

Be sure walkways and front doors are well lit and clear of debris

Never invite anyone inside your home

Avoid letting kids grab candy out of a bowl, hand it out instead which prevents the spread of germs

Make sure all treats are individually wrapped and sealed

If you notice anything suspicious call police at (505) 428-3710.

HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
